Multiple qurbanis are encouraged. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) consistently gave two sacrifices: his own obligation, plus a second for members of the ummah without the means to do it themselves. That sunnah carries double the reward.
Qurbani, known also as udhiya, refers to the slaughter of a livestock animal across the three days of Eid ul Adha, from the 10th through the 13th of Dhul Hijjah. The practice honours what Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail went through, and it remains one of the defining acts of worship during the hajj months.
Every sane Muslim who has reached mature age and holds wealth above the Nisab threshold carries this obligation. Under the Hanafi school, qurbani is compulsory. Other schools classify it as a strongly recommended sunnah. Regardless of which position you follow, giving qurbani brings immense reward.
The sacrificial animal has to meet Islamic guidelines. Sheep and goats need to be a minimum of one year old and count as a single share. Cows need to be two years old minimum and yield seven shares. Camels, five years minimum, also seven shares. Every animal must be in good health and sacrificed according to Islamic principles. The meat splits three ways: your household, people you know, and those in need.
