UNDERSTANDING 'ASHURA: ITS DEEP MEANING IN ISLAMIC HISTORY

One of the most profound days in our calendar! 'Ashura is almost here! Derived from the Arabic word for 'ten', this significant day falls on the 10th of Muharram, the very first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims across the world mark this day with profound reverence. In this blog post we will explore the historical and spiritual layers of 'Ashura, shining light on what makes it so important.

Together we can understand Muharram on a deeper level.

What is ‘Ashura?

'Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram. It's recognized by Muslims everywhere for the historical events that took place on this day. It's also a day of deep spiritual reflection and acts of worship. Its importance stretches back thousands of years, with countless generations experiencing its blessings and witnessing its depth. But how does ‘Ashura impact our daily lives? Well, a blessed companion of the Prophet shared with us that when asked about fasting on the day of Arafat, the Prophet ﷺ said, “It will expiate the sins of the previous and upcoming years.” He also shared that when asked about fasting on the Day of Ashura, the Prophet remarked, “It will expiate the sins of the past year.”

Why is ‘Ashura Important?

As we just read from our Prophet ﷺ himself, all our entire sins from the past year are forgiven! That is the power of Ashura. But that is not all, Ashura is a day of immense historical significance. According to many ‘Ashura is the day in which our Prophet Nuh (as) settled his Ark! It is also the day in which the Prophet Musa (as) and the Children of Israel were miraculously saved from Pharaoh's evil. This means that 'Ashura is the day that marks divine interventions. The Day of Ashura also carries sadness. It is the day when Muslims across the globe pay their deepest respects and remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) at the Battle of Karbala where his companions and loved ones were held captive, tortured and denied water. When Imam Hussain (ra) passed away, his family and companions were forced to flee through dry, expansive desert. Despite their struggles, they kept the words of the Qur’an on their lips, never losing hope and always trusting in Allah (swt).

What ‘Ashura Teaches Us

This day isn't just a historical milestone. We can extract lessons!

Through the Ark of Nuh we can learn how to stay strong and believe even when things are tough.

Through the Prophet Musa (as) and his followers we can think about the brave choices made by special people from the past.

And through Imam Hussain's (RA) stand against tyranny we can reflect on how to always choose what's right and fair.

Is 'Ashura a Day of Giving and Reflection?

Absolutely! Reflecting on the profound lessons of 'Ashura and emulating the virtues of the figures associated with it is encouraged. Giving to charity, engaging in acts of kindness, and fasting are some of the ways Muslims honour this day. Embracing the spirit of 'Ashura means standing up for justice, truth, and righteousness in our own lives. During Sacred Months the reward of goodness is multiplied. So, for charity given sincerely in Muharram you can see an increase in your life and deeds! We invite you through the month of Muharram to give generously. Donate to our Muharram appeal and help provide relief and protection for vulnerable communities worldwide. .
