Muharram is a significant time for Muslims to remember and reflect on the story of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.
Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions faced difficult situations in the battle of Karbala. They bravely stood up for their beliefs, even though it meant making monumental sacrifices.
Muharram is the first month of Islamic (Hijri) calendar. It is one of the four sacred months about which Allah (SWT) says:
The number of months with Allah is twelve months (lunar), so the day when He created the heavens and the Earth; of these, four are sacred (Dhul Qadha, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab). That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during these months.” (Surah At-Tawbah, Ayah 36)
The month of Muharram inspires people to engage in religious activities and worship Allah. In this month the reward of even the smallest acts on the Day of Ashura are multiplied. People are encouraged to help the needy by doing more charitable acts and earn countless blessings in return during Muharram.

Muharram begins the Islamic year. It is one of the four sacred months Allah set aside, a season to pause, to count our blessings, and to move closer to Him through the good we put into the world.
In many regions of the world, women starts their morning with a two-hour walk to obtain water, usually the muddy one. This type of water causes sever diseases and sometimes death to these individuals, but these families doesn't have any other option than this. Be a hope, and let's build water plants and well in these areas to help these vulnerable communities in just $25/month.
The Prophet ﷺ described Muharram as “the month of Allah” — a title that reflects its immense significance. Begin this sacred month with an act of kindness, and let your giving be a source of mercy and purpose.
As we reflect on patience, sacrifice, and faith during Muharram, let us remember those whose daily lives are shaped by struggle and hardship.
This Muharram, extend your compassion and bring hope to those who need it most.
Muharram reminds us that struggle is woven into life, and that our response to it is meant to be mercy.
You can give a family clean water from $300. You can cover a year of a Hafiz's studies for $684. Give what feels right. It will grow far beyond it.
This is Sadaqah Jariyah, a gift that keeps on giving. The well you fund now may still be running long after your name is remembered by no one but Allah. The Hafiz you back will keep the Qur'an alive within him for a lifetime, and every recitation sends reward straight back to your account.
Ashura: A Day of Mourning
Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram, and it marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. DuringOn this day, many people attend Islamic gatherings where they recite elegies (poetry) commemorating Imam Hussian (AS) and his companions.
It’s also a time for Muslims to remember the spirit of Imam Hussain (AS) through acts of charity like donating food or water to the less fortunate.

Muharram 2026 is expected to begin on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, marking the start of the Islamic New Year 1448 AH. The month is expected to end around mid-July 2026, when the month of Safar begins. The exact dates depend on the sighting of the new crescent moon and may vary by a day in different regions.
The Day of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, is expected to fall on Thursday, June 25, 2026, in most regions. Ashura is the most significant day of the Islamic year after Ramadan, marking both the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (AS) from Pharaoh and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) at Karbala.
Fasting on Ashura is a highly recommended Sunnah, not an obligation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The best fasting after Ramadan is the fasting of the month of Allah, Muharram' (Sahih Muslim). Most scholars recommend fasting both the 9th and 10th, or the 10th and 11th, of Muharram.
On the 7th of Muharram, 61 AH, the forces of the Umayyad governor Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad blocked Imam Hussain (RA) and his family and companions from accessing the Euphrates River, their only water source. For three days, in extreme desert heat, they were denied water, before the battle and martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) took place on the 10th of Muharram.
Donations made to a registered 501(c)(3) Islamic charity in the USA are tax-deductible under U.S. law, and donors receive a formal receipt automatically after giving. You can donate online before or on the Day of Ashura, choose Zakat, Sadaqah, or a specific project such as a water well, and your tax receipt will be issued for your records.
Donating a water well can fulfil either Zakat or Sadaqah, depending on how the charity structures the donation and how it is designated at checkout. Most Islamic charities allow donors to select Zakat specifically during checkout, in which case the water well donation counts toward the donor's Zakat obligation for that year.
The first 10 days of Muharram are recommended for increased fasting, extra voluntary prayer, sincere repentance (tawbah), reciting the Qur'an, remembering Allah through dhikr, and giving charity. Many Muslims also choose to be especially generous toward their own family on the Day of Ashura, following a practice mentioned in various traditions.
A water well donation typically ranges from around 500 to 1,000 US or Canadian dollars depending on the type and depth of well, and a single well commonly provides safe drinking water to between 200 and several thousand people, often lasting 10 to 20 years or more with basic maintenance.
Muharram is called the sacred month, and is also known as the month of Allah, because it is one of four months named directly in the Qur'an as sacred, alongside Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Rajab. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) referred to it by this title in a hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim.
Yes, fasting only on the 10th of Muharram is valid and still carries the reward of expiating the sins of the past year, as mentioned in Sahih Muslim. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) intended to also fast on the 9th to distinguish the practice from that of other communities, so fasting both days is considered more complete and is the preferred practice.
