What is Muharram?

One of the most significant months in the Islamic calendar is Muharram, which marks the beginning of a new Islamic year. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) called it "the Sacred Month of Allah."

In the Holy Quran: Allah says,

Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him]. Holy Qur'an (9:36)

During this noble month, Allah (SWT) commands us to focus on our spirituality and refrain from evil. This implies that we ought to abstain from wrongdoing and immoral behavior to act with sincerity, carry out good deeds, and worship Allah (SWT).

The Battle of Karbala: A Deep Dive on the Day of Ashura

The Battle of Karbala was fought on October 10, 680 AD, in Karbala between the family and followers of Imam Hussain Ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the army of the second Umayyad dynasty, headed by Caliph Yazid I.

Imam Hussian (RA) stopped in Karbala on the third of Muharram and made his camp there. He encountered a large formation commanded by Umar Ibn Saad, son of the founder of Kufah, equipped with around 4,000 soldiers. On the seventh day of Muharram, Yazid I refused to provide water to Imam Hussain, his family, and his followers.

The two parties engaged in battle on the tenth of Muharram; the Day of Ashura. They fought cruelly, and in the process, all the members of Imam Hussain’s family, including Imam Hussain (RA) himself, were killed in battle.

The tragic events of the Battle of Karbala saw Imam Hussain's camp suffer a considerable blow. After being kidnapped, all the women and children of Imam Hussain’s family had to face a horrible journey to Yazid court in Damascus.

The theme of the Battle of Karbala continues to appeal to people. It remains open to interpretation as courage, righteousness, and the ability to die for one’s beliefs. It is a clear pointer to man’s ability to bounce back from hardship.

It is a time to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his followers, who upheld the principles of truth and righteousness. As we draw inspiration from their sacrifice, consider supporting Al Mustafa Canada’s efforts to help and uplift those in need worldwide.
